Activities of daily living refers to how well an individual can care for themselves. These are skills that many individuals learn early in life. Unfortunately, as people age seniors may lose the ability to perform some of these skills. It is important to understand what the term activities of daily living evaluation means especially in regards to home care services. This is important because it will determine how you will need a home care agency to care for your loved one. For the most part Home Care services creates a plan that comes from the activities of daily living evaluations. I have found that many loved ones are not sure what this means. In order to receive assistance from long term care insurance, Medicaid, or other insurances providers an individual must pass a test to show that home care is truly needed. If an Activities of daily living test is not passed unfortunately the insurance providers will not pay for home care services. They simply believe that an individual does not need care if they can pass an evaluation. It is extremely important to research this topic and understand what Activities of daily living activities will be evaluated. Example of Activities of daily living simply means that a loved one is unable to perform certain tasks such as bathing, mobility functions, toileting, and feeding themselves among other things. These are the qualifications used to receive benefits for in home care services. You do not want to be caught off guard without understanding this one key factor. Make sure that you take notes so that you are able to explain how your loved one is unable to perform certain Activities of daily living. This will help with the process of getting approved for long term care benefits or other insurance.When being observed for activities of daily living for evaluation and individual is then rated from 7-1. 7 means they can independently perform activities of daily living an a 1 means that they cannot perform it at all and will need care giver assistance.
Example of Activities of Daily Living:
- Getting dressed – Selecting clothes to wear and undressing at the end of the day.
- Eating – Feeding ourselves (including chewing and swallowing food).
- Toileting- Going to the bathroom
- Bathing – Taking a bath or a shower for personal hygiene.
- e bathroom and being able to control bowel and bladder.
- Oral Hygiene – Brushing teeth or dentures as needed.
- Grooming – Washing our hair and shaving as needed.
- Walking – Moving around from place to place as needed.
- Bed Mobility
- Wheel Chair mobility
- Using a Telephone
- Home Management
- Health Management
- Safety Management
If your loved one doesn’t pass the evaluation a home care agency will be able to assist your loved one. Not only will this give you a peace of mind but your loved one will also feel less of a burden
